Prioritising children

9 May, 2019

At the Annual Delegates Conference and on behalf of UK Council, Karen Smith asked for support with a campaign to protect children from homelessness and sufficiently prepare them for life outside of care.

She outlined the 28% increase in children being placed in inappropriate accommodation by local authorities and feeling unsafe.

“Leaving care is a key moment in young people’s lives and events at this stage in their life will have a lasting impact,” she explained.

Relating a story of a ‘vulnerable’ 17-year-old who was inappropriately housed and eventually detained under the Mental Health Act, Karen reiterated the need to change homelessness legislation so all people under 25 leaving care are a priority group.

The motion was unanimously carried.
