A new guide documents the input of allied health practitioners (AHPs) in the maternity care pathway, including diagnostic radiographers and sonographers.

Published by Health Education England (HEE), The engagement of Allied Health Professionals and Psychologists in the maternity care pathway raises awareness of the significant role AHPs play.

“Currently there is limited awareness, understanding and visibility,” the document says.

“These professional groups are seldom referred to in local maternity workforce plans. The scope of this work was to understand and describe the current contribution that AHPs make to the five stages of the maternity pathway.”

Gill Harrison and Nigel Thomson, professional officers at the SCoR, Kathryn Cook, lead sonographer at St George’s University Hospitals, and Victoria Hipperson, consultant radiographer at Barts Health, contributed to the guide.
