Applications sought for Editor-in-Chief post at Radiography journal

Professor Julie Nightingale (pictured right) will be stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of Radiography with effect from December 2021. Consequently, the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) is seeking an outstanding individual to become Editor-in-Chief Designate from summer 2021, and Editor-in-Chief from 1st January 2022. The closing date for applications is February 12th 2021.

The appointment will be for a fixed term of three years from 1 January 2022 with a six-month transition planned with the current Editor-in-Chief. The new Editor-in-Chief will work with the Council of the Society of Radiographers and Trustees of the College of Radiographers, and Elsevier our Publisher, to set out both the vision and the strategy for the Journal for the next publishing term. The successful applicant will work with the editorial team to deliver the Journal’s strategic goals and will seek to grow the reputation and readership of the Journal.

We offer the successful applicant the opportunity to lead, shape and innovate peer review communication in radiography. You will receive an annual honorarium for your services as Editor-in-Chief from 1 January 2022, plus reasonable expenses incurred during the pursuit of the role. You will also receive a complimentary subscription to the Journal for your personal use and complimentary access to Science Direct and Scopus during your term of office.

If you are a radiographer, a Society of Radiographers member, and believe you have international professional and academic standing, a strong track record of publishing papers in peer reviewed journals, editorial experience and excellent leadership and management skills, and the ability to encourage and develop authors from around the world, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The role:

  • You will work alongside the SCoR and the Publisher to review, modify and ultimately deliver the Journal’s strategic goals with the aim of continuously improving the Journal’s standards and reputation.
  • You will be ultimately responsible for the peer review process of all journal manuscripts. This includes ensuring: High scientific standards of accepted manuscripts. Taking reasonable efforts to ensure that published papers and their authors abide by scientific standards for integrity and objectivity, do not infringe the proprietary rights of others, do not defame others, and do not cause damage or harm to persons or property or to the good reputation of the Journal; High standards of editorial practice. Efficient, timely and confidential coordination of editing, refereeing, submission for production and communications with authors. Ensure conformity with the Journal’s Editorial Policies.
  • You will chair bi-annual Editorial Board meetings where possible in person, but otherwise via teleconference. You will provide an Editor’s report at such meetings. 

You will also represent the Journal at:

  • Bi-annual meetings with the Society and College of Radiographers leadership team. These usually occur on the same day and location as the Journal’s Editorial Board meetings.
  • Meetings of the Society of Radiographers UK Council, usually one per year at SCoR headquarters in London.
  • Meetings of the College of Radiographers Board of Trustees, usually one per year at SCoR headquarters in London.
  • Relevant international conferences such as the European Congress of Radiology and the ISRRT World Congress either on-line or face to face.
  • Meetings with the European Federation of Radiographer Societies and Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy, which maybe on-line or face to face usually during the annual European Congress of Radiology.
  • You will write and commission guest editorials for the journal. You will also work with the Associate Editors and Editorial Board to actively solicit high quality review articles and special issues from key opinion leaders to engage the readership with topical issues and raise the impact of the Journal.
  • You will seek opportunities to promote the Journal to potential authors, reviewers and readers. This may include engaging in author outreach activities at key conferences and events to encourage the submission of high-quality manuscripts from both novice and experienced authors.

The ideal applicant:

  • You will have a previous publishing and reviewing track record and ideally have editorial experience.
  • Recognised as an expert in your field.  You have a good understanding of related and interdisciplinary areas and have a view of emerging topics.
  • You are a people-oriented networker, wth international contacts, and the ability to attract key individuals as top authors, reviewers, guest editors or editorial board members.
  • You are the ambassador for the journal, and foster collaboration and teamwork with your Associate Editors, the Editorial Board, and the wider International Advisory Board.
  • You are a strategic thinker and together with the SCoR and Publisher, you will develop ideas about future directions for the journal and you are also open to feedback from authors, reviewers and readers.
  • You have an interest in the future of learned journals, and communication in general.

The successful applicant will agree not to perform simultaneous editorial activities for any other scientific journal which may reasonably be considered as being in competition with the Journal. They should not be employed as an Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor, for other related Journals, or should be willing to step down from such a position on appointment as Editor-in-Chief for Radiography.
